The Work of FM Alexander
FM Alexander was an actor. Born in 1869, hailing from Australia, he loved reciting poetry and studying the works of Shakespeare. He decided to pursue recitation as a profession and he writes in his third book ‘All went well for some years...’ (Alexander, FM, The Use of the Self ) until he started experiencing conditions of hoarseness. Sometimes he would lose his voice altogether.
Neither medical treatments nor vocal techniques helped him with his trouble. Determined to solve the problem for himself, he began investigating what he was doing to himself when reciting that was causing his problem. What started as a simple solution-based process turned into an ‘entirely new field of enquiry’ (Alexander, FM, The Use of the Self) exploring how the ideas and beliefs he had of himself affected the way he moved, thus how he behaved and performed.
Eager to share his work with the world, Alexander moved to London in the early 1900s and began teaching. He worked with many public figures including Sir Henry Irving, Aldous Huxley and George Bernard Shaw - all of whom were fascinated by the work . As time went on, Alexander wrote four books and started a Teacher Training Course in hopes his work would live on after his death in 1955.
The Work of Don Weed
These days, there are many different methods and approaches to Alexander's work. I am trained in the Interactive Teaching Method. ITM was created by Dr. Don Weed, a retired actor, chiropractor, and baseball enthusiast, who studied with Marjorie Barstow in Nebraska, beginning in the 1970's. Marjorie was the first to earn her teacher training certificate from FM Alexander.
Inspired by Marjorie's care and commitment to the work and the words of FM, Don designed a method of studying Alexander's work that is simple, constructive and enriching, leading those who study it towards a fuller and more enjoyable life.
